The Deadlys will feature an expanded community awards category in 2010, recognising exceptional individuals and initiatives that make a real difference in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities across Australia.

As a result, nominations for the Deadlys Community Awards have been extended until 5pm Friday, 30 July 2010.

The Deadlys represent a national celebration of the best Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders in music, sport, the arts, culture, employment, education, health and leadership.

The Deadlys will be held at the Sydney Opera House on 27 September 2010.

New award categories in the community awards category for the 2010 ceremony are Health Worker of the Year, Outstanding Achievement in Cultural Advancement and Leader of the Year.

Event producer Gavin Jones said the new categories reflect the high level of participation and feedback the Deadlys receive each year from the community.

“The Deadlys are in their 16th year and over the years we’ve made a point to adjust the award categories to better reflect that feedback and the great work being done in our communities,” Gavin said.

“Health is all-important, so we felt it was only right to expand the health award to celebrate and pay tribute to the outstanding work that is being done by organisations, individuals working on the frontlines and in health service delivery.

“A new Cultural Advancement award will recognise work in the areas of cultural teaching, maintenance and advancement through language retention, art and cultural education.

“The addition of Leader of the Year award will allow the community to recognise long-serving community leaders, as well as inspiring emerging young leaders.”
