Employers, training and community organisations and all levels of government are working together to offer new training and employment opportunities for 12 Indigenous people across Central Queensland.
Treasurer and Minister for Employment and Economic Development Andrew Fraser said five people from Boulia, one in Barcaldine and two each in Longreach, Emerald and Woorabinda would be recruited to complete paid work placements while learning to operate earth moving machinery.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd officially launched the National Indigenous Centre of Excellence this morning in front of community members and a who’s who of Indigenous sporting legends.
New South Wales Premier Kristina Keneally and Minister for Indigenous Affairs Jenny Macklin were also on hand for the opening of the centre, built on the grounds of the old Redfern Public School.

Artworks by 19 Indigenous inmates in Victoria were a highlight of Melbourne’s premier Indigenous arts festival, Yalukit Willam Ngargee, as part of the St Kilda Festival.
The exhibition Confined II, hosted at the St Kilda Town Hall Gallery, was a major event at Yalukit Willam Ngargee (meaning People, Place, Gathering), which celebrates Boon Wurrung Country (the bay area), a significant meeting place for Aboriginal people for thousands of years.

Rugby league to recruit Indigenous trainees

As the Indigenous All Stars team warms up for their game, rugby league is offering opportunities for ten new Indigenous trainees also getting ready to start work with Queensland Rugby League’s Northern Division.
Treasurer and Minister for Employment and Economic Development Andrew Fraser said the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative’s First Start program had committed $190,000 for positions in Mackay, Cairns, Townsville, Mount Isa, Palm Island, Weipa and Bamaga. read more

Not only did Vibe Alive return for a second successful national tour, Deadly Vibe magazine reached its 150th issue, The Deadly Awards turned 15 with the biggest show to date, and with our sister company Deadly TV, we even started work on our own television show called Living Strong, which, by the way, you can watch on NITV Tuesday nights at 7:30pm. read more
Raiders resign Waddell

The Canberra Raiders have resigned promising young Aboriginal half Travis Waddell until the end of the 2012 season.
The 20 year-old has enjoyed a rapid rise through the clubs ranks, making his NRL debut this year and playing a total of 10 games for the season.
Travis has also earned selection into the Indigenous All Stars team and was a member of the Raiders premiership winning Toyota Cup team in 2008.

Considering he’s only the second Indigenous player to be drafted into the NBA, it’s quite prophetic really that Patrick Mills should be selected by a team called “The Trailblazers”.
Since emerging from the AIS as a precious teenage talent, 20 year-old Patrick has indeed been burning trails right through Australian, US and International basketball arena's.
Patrick's remarkable rise reached a huge milestone yesterday when he was selected by Portland with the 55th pick of the draft. read more

An early knockdown and a strong final two rounds has won Anthony Mundine the third world title of his professional boxing career by the narrowest of margins.
Fighting at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre last night, Indigenous boxers Daniel Geale and Mundine engaged in one of the classic all-Australian fights, brawling their way through 12 engrossing rounds in which both fighters showed true world class qualities and were near impossible to separate on points at the final bell.

Indigenous Affairs Minister Jenny Macklin yesterday announced a $110 million cash injection to build and repair homes in remote West Australian Indigenous communities.
The funding is part of the remote Indigenous housing national partnership announced last November and will go towards new houses, major upgrades and repairs to existing houses.

Writing in a paper released today by the Menzies Research Centre, Dr Johns argues that money spent on remote community housing, while “generous and well-targeted”, has resulted in wrecked houses and dependant communities.

Indigenous Affairs Minister Jenny Macklin has announced a $250, 000 grant to expand Australian Rules football opportunities for Indigenous people in the East Kimberly region of Western Australia.
Money from the grant will be used to employ a community development officer based in Kununurra as well as an administrator who will manage football activities in the region and employ two AFL Indigenous trainees to help deliver school based programs.
