Deadlys finalists announced - Vote Now!

Friday, 30 July 2010

The quest to find Indigenous Australia’s best in 2010 has begun.

Finalists were announced today in what is arguably Australia’s biggest, single event celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, and voting is now open.

The National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Music, Sport, Entertainment and Community Awards, aka the Deadlys, is back for its 16th year at the Sydney Opera House on 27 September 2010.  read more

Enough's Enough

"I believe I am a role model for children and I did this to show my kids this type of behaviour is wrong.

"This isn't about me or Andrew Johns, it's about arresting racism and standing up for my beliefs. I want to move on now and I know something positive will come from this."

With those words, and the actions that preceded them, 29-year-old rugby league player Timana Tahu became the latest in a line of proud Indigenous men who’ve utilised their profile and visibility as elite sportsmen to send a strong message that racism has no place in Australian sport or society.

Of course, we’re referring to the moment last month when Timana walked out on the New South Wales State of Origin team in protest to racist remarks made by the assistant coach, Andrew Johns, directed at Queensland’s Indigenous and Polynesian players.

In doing so, he not only forfeited the most coveted representative honour of his sport, a State of Origin jersey, but also became a far greater legend in the eyes of thousands of Australians, both black and white, around the country.
